The River of Doubt: Brazil

President Roosevelt - In the Amazon

This photo captures President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt (seated, far right), and his party in discussion prior to their departure into the Brazilian jungle, circa 1913. Their goal – locating the headwaters of El Rio da Duvida (The River of Doubt) – proved nearly fatal to the President. Yet, he stared death squarely in the face, battling through both a leg wound infection and the contraction of malaria. Roosevelt prevailed, ultimately returning to the United States upon successfully exploring this uncharted corner of the world. The never-before navigated River of Doubt was later named Rio Roosevelt.
