One of the most important music festivals in all of Latin America, the Viña del Mar International Song Festival, begins today in Viña del Mar, Chile. This festival is an international spectacle that began in 1960 when a group of musicians gathered to play in a fair being held in the Quinta Vergara gardens.
Nowadays, the Viña del Mar International Song Festival is a legendary event that draws such world-famous artists as Sting and Morissey, as well as many acclaimed Chilean and Latin American musicians. The festival is known for having an extremely expressive audience traditionally known as “El Monstruo” for their ability to either make an artist on the spot or cause them to be booed offstage.
This year’s edition runs from Feb. 22 to Feb. 27 and is being broadcast by Chilevisión.
