An Oasis of Awesome – Extreme Sports in Huacachina, Peru

A few miles outside of Ica in southwest Peru lies the tiny oasis town of Huacachina. While the town once attracted many rich visitors wishing to bathe in the supposedly medicinal waters of the oasis, now it is home to little more than a few palm trees and some restaurants lying lazily on the banks of the lagoon.

Still, the town is very easily accessible by bus if you are near Ica, and for a very inexpensive and exhilarating day trip, visitors can take part in Huacachina’s main draw – some of the finest extreme sports in Peru.

Sandboarding is one of the main attractions that the town has to offer, and is well suited for the braver and more athletically-inclined among us. For those not so willing to attempt a vertical descent down a three-hundred foot sand dune, there is always the option to lay belly down and go “sand-sledding.”

Or, if you are feeling a little lazier (but just as brave,)  try strapping on your seatbelt and trusting the skill of your Peruvian driver as you plummet down the monstrous dunes with nothing but the wind and the roar of a dune buggy in your ear.
