Eyes of Rio

By Bettie Gonzales

The French artist and photographer JR, known for his street art with a cause, did not disappoint with his “Women are Heroes” campaign in the Favela Morro da Providencia in Rio de Janeiro. His giant photographs showcase the eyes of women from the favela, who stare out onto the city of Rio. JR was specifically inspired by women who had lost loved ones due to the violence that so often occurs in the city’s dangerous neighborhoods. His photos are so huge that it took longer to place them on the walls of the houses than it took to take them. It is a must-see when in Rio.
